Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. While a small girl, Ford was battling anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by word associations. Ford became interested in the profession of acting in her teenage years and she was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized this school wasn't suitable for her. Ford made an application at the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing on Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition as a stand-up comedian and was added to her repertoire in 1996.
